This beautiful Victorian theatre, also known as 'Entertainment Hall', was built in 1879. The architect was Rowland Plumbe (1838-1919). Langdon Down used this theatre for entertainment and as a church. Residents were encouraged to learn music and drama. So he was well ahead of his time. In those days it was not a public theatre.
We always celebrated Christmas at the theatre, which was organized by the day centre staff.
In 2003-2005 the Textile Conservation Centre at the Winchester School of Arts carried out the restoration of the stage mechanisms and painted canvas scenery. This theatre is still in use. I get very excited when I see it on television in programmes like Agatha Christie's Poirot.
