Dear Miriam,
Andy Merriman suggested that I contact you. I'd very much like to obtain a copy of your photograph, reproduced on p. 195 of Tales of Normansfield.
Thanks so much -- great website!
All best,
Deborah

I first saw this building last year and was fascinated by it and its history. I am planning to go the Conference being held there in May 2012 called : Past Present and Future. I am looking forward to seeing inside this lovely building.

Hi Miriam,
I have a real love of old buildings and its such a shame to see them deteriorate as Normansfield has...tho it sounds as tho something is now being done to save the site...well done on your website..its always great to see what these old buildings looked like in all their glory...its always hard to see them demolished only to be replaced by some modern souless block of flats or houses!
I would be grateful to hear how the site is now and whether anymore has been done to do it up? If you could email me that would be great?
Hello Helen,
I will contact the LDCT first as I do not know what the present developments are.

You will be glad to hear that It looks as though the local council are NOT letting the developers get away with waiting for the building to fall into total decay. Work started in October 2010 to secure the site and make repairs to stop any further deterioration to the roof. Here's hoping something positive will finally happen here!
Hello Ray,
That is just brilliant!!!

I live just round the corner from Normansfield (on Lower Teddington Road). It is great to see your excellent website and the video - well done for all the effort you have put into it! We have been here since the mid-1970's but never saw inside the site when it was a functioning unit - so thanks a lot!
The London Metropolitan Archives http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Records_and_archives/ have finished cataloguing and preserving a huge collection of material from Normansfield including original correspondence of the Langdon-Downe family from 1881 - 1968 and a large collection of photo's (mostly in the form of glass negatives). I went to a brief talk on this project at LMA recently and the lecturer and her handout including a glowing reference to your website which is how I found you.
Hello Ray,
One day I would like to visit the LMA as the collection of Normansfield must be really interesting. I did not know that the LMA knew about my website. It'a a great compliment.

Hi! This is a beautiful place, do you have any information about its current state? It would be sad to hear they've let it get into such a state that demolition is necessary rather than redevelopment :(
Hello Kerry,
Well, if the company that bought the land leave it as it is, demolition is probably the only option. It sounds awful, but perhaps that was their intention in the first place. Hopefully I am wrong. I would like to know what the responsibilities/obligations are when you own a grade II listed building.

Hi all,
I was watching a film last night called Dorean Gray and realized it was Normansfield Theatre in the film, after this it reminded me of when I used to do karate in there with my auntie liz when I was 5 years old taught by Mark. This is what prompt me to look up Normansfield online and find this site.
My name is Karina Fagan Daughter of Miream and Ken who both worked and met at normansfield back in 1970's. I was born in 1981 and spent my first 5 years of my life living in the old laundrette were Trematon used to stand. Me, my parents and 2 younger sisters were then moved to the front of Normansfield to the (then New) houses next to Haydon house so me and my sisters all grew up on the grounds knowing most Residents and staff at Normansfield.
Normanfield means more to me then I can say and I have alot of good memory's there. Just a shame there is not other sites like this to show apprication and remember Normansfield like it do.
Many Thanks
Karina

Hi, great site and history on Normansfield. I visited Normansfield recently to take some photographs which I posted on the forum of www.talkurbex.com and it has deteriorated further. Sadly this is a common tactic by developers who are unwilling to foot the bill for the upkeep of such beautiful buildings, they allow them to degrade to such an extent that they are declared structurally unsafe and can then be demolished thus clearing the way for them to build hideous office blocks etc.
Hello John,
That is exactly my fear. I will have a look at your photographs.

I am glad I found your site. I worked at Normansfield in the late 1960s as staff/deputy/charge nurse. Conditions were horrendous but the "patients" received a high standard of care thanks to the devoted staff.I would love to get in touch with Theresa Hughes who worked there from 1965-1990.I do not remember the name but we must have seen each other at some time. Thanks for putting this site together.Merton.

During research into my family history I have discovered that a cousin of my great grandmother's was an 'Attendant' at Normansfield in 1901.
I have found your site very interesting - well done for all the hard work. :-)
Hello Susan,
It's very interesting to research you family history. You may like to read the the book ' Tales of Normansfield' by Andy Merriman, published by the DSA, or contact the Langdon Down Centre Trust. Perharps they can help you with your research!

I worked at normansfield from 1976 to 1984....I worked on all the wards..but mainly on south wing and it was terrible really...over a hundred girls ..low grades and high grades as they were called then... so much i could write... dreadful times.. but our girls were all loved.. bathed fed and clean clothes every day.. but that was all we could offer with four staff each shift if we were lucky.....
Thanks to mencap and Brian Rix every patient did a get holiday at Selsey Bill.. Bill House as it was known.. have wonderful memories of times there..The girls having good food and fresh sea air... Should write a book really...
Anyone want any info please ask me.. I have much knowledge of how the hospital was run....
sharon

Hi there
Enjoyed looking through this site very much. Well done to the work put into this site. I love some of the older pictures of the hospital, it is good to see what it looks like when it was open. Ive visited normansfield twice, and it is in a bad way.
Also, did the hospital used to cover the site where the new houses have been built?
Here are some photos of Normansfield by me http://www.flickr.com/photos/d40tucker/sets/72157606708453601/
enjoy
all the best
nathan
Brilliant photos!!!!
Thanks a lot Nathan.
And to answer your question: Yes the ground did cover the whole area where the new houses have been built.

Terry Wood gave me my first job in care at Normansfield in August 1982. I worked on Maple for a year before training as a nurse in (what was then) RNMH. I returned to Normansfield as a qualified nurse, working on Willow, Cedar, Activities Co-Ordinator, Community Nurse and finally Sycamore. I left in 1993. I have nothing but very fond memories of Normansfield and many of the people who lived and worked there. Well done Miriam, this is a brilliant site.
